Photographs of Cuba by Cal Mackenzie will be exhibited at the Little
Dog Coffee Shop during the entire month of May.
During the week of May 11-19 Cuban books will be on display at the
Gulf of Maine Bookstore. Area restaurants and cafes will feature
special Cuban dishes and refreshments on their menus. Participating
businesses include: Frontier Café, Big Top Deli, Broadway Deli, El
Camino, Flip Side Pizza, Gelato Fiasco, Henry & Marty, Little Dog
Coffee Shop, Scarlet Begonia, and Wild Oats Bakery & Cafe.

The 28th Annual PLANTS FOR PEACE Sale will be on Sat. and Sun., May 18 and 19 from 9-10 a.m….rain or shine. Plants are $3 each. MANY kinds of perennials will be available including old favorites as well as new and unusual plants for sun and shade gardens, bogs; a few vines and ground covers. Don’t forget to pick up your FREE small plant.

Taught with an engaging and highly effective student-centered approach to language acquisition. these classes provide you with functional and practical communication skills. Classes are conducted primarily in Spanish, incorporating film, audio, and authentic cultural materials. Role-playing and other activities are used to prepare you to communicate with and understand Spanish-speaking people.
the instructor: Pilar has a Ph.D in Hispanic Studies from Brown University where she received a Distinguished Teacher Award and 15+ years of experience of teaching Spanish language, literature and culture at Colby, Bowdoin, and Bates Colleges, Plattsburgh State Universities of NY and privately. She is a member of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish & Portuguese, the Foreign Language Association of Maine, and the Maine Association of Interpretors and Translators. Many of Pilar’s students successfully use their Spanish at work, in travel, or in volunteer service.
BEGINNING SPANISH Tuesdays 7:00-8:30 pm (April 16-June 17))
This course is intended for true beginners or anyone who studied Spanish more than 5 years ago. When you complete it you will be able to: greet & introduce others, provide basic personal information; ask questions; express likes, dislikes, preferences & obligations; tell time & give dates; make travel & hotel arrangements; use numbers up to millions; express future plans; describe your family & friends, and make comparisons.
MID-BEGINNING SPANISH Tuesdays 5:30-7:00 pm (April 16 – June 17)
This course is intended for beginners who are comfortable speaking in the Present Indicative tense or who are continuing from the Beginning Spanish class. When you complete it, you will be able to talk about the past; express future plans; describe people & their homes, the weather; discuss activities at home and at work, foods and meals; order a meal in a restaurant and shop for food and express emotions.
ADVANCED conversation Thursdays 6:00-7:30pm ( 8 classes- $200; May 9th-June 27))
Offered for advanced students, native speakers and school teachers to maintain linguistic fluency and add to their cultural knowledge. The instructor presents background information on newly selected poems, short stories, short plays or award-winning short films viewed in class so you can discuss pertinent aspects and related issues. Each session covers new material to maintain interest of continuing participants.
